Hanukkah

History of Hanukshutterstock_167364551kah

Hanukkah, a Jewish holiday, is an event that last for eight days in commemoration of the victory over their oppressors and for a miracle that took place in 165 B.C. in the rededication of the second Holy Temple.

Unfortunately, the Land of Israel became a place of unrest and insubordination because of the invasion of the Syria-Greek Empire. Under the cruel reign of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the Jewish people were forced to abandon their religion and coerce to worship Greek gods. Antiochus also desecrated the Holy Temple by offering pig sacrifices on an altar dedicated to Zeus. Under the leadership of Judah the Maccabee, the Jewish people fought against this iron rule and after two year, they were able to banish the Syrian forces, gain control of Jerusalem, and reestablished their religious worship.

The Holy Temple had been defiled and needed cleansing and rededicating. The Jewish people began to rebuild the altar, make new vessels and light the menorah or candelabrum. The menorah needed an eight-day supply of oil and they found a small amount, which was barely enough to keep the candlesticks burning for one day. Miraculously, that minute amount of oil kept the menorah lit for eight days. This provided time for them to make more oil so the flame of the candelabrum would burn continually as required by the Talmud.

The revolution against the Seleucid monarchy and the mystery of the oil, gives the Jewish people a cause to celebrate and remember.
