A housewife from Oak Hill, West Virginia who dedicated her time to advocating for the elderly in nursing homes is recognized as the official founder of Grandparents Day. Marian McQuade also spent her time educating the youth about the assets of the elderly and all of the contributions seniors had made to society throughout history. She took the idea of a holiday honoring the elderly to her state senator. In 1973, Senator Jennings Randolph introduced a resolution which called for a national holiday, Grandparents Day. Five years later, President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation on August 3rd, stating that Grandparents Day would henceforth be recognized as a national holiday and celebrated annually on the first Sunday of September after Labor Day. He stated that the purpose of the holiday was to honor grandparents and give grandparents an opportunity to express the love they have for their grandchildren. In addition, Grandparents Day was also meant to be a day on which children could learn about the strength, wisdom, and abundant guidance the older generation could offer.
