Long summer days drenched in bright sunlight are finally here. Could there be a better floral representation of lazy sunny days then the iconic and beautiful sunflower? Symbolizing adoration, the bright yellow flowers constantly turn their face turned towards the sun, giving them their common name. The official genus of the bloom is helianthus, a name which recognizes Helios, the sun god. An interesting fact about this cheerful flower is that in reality, the sunflower head is made up of between 1,000 and 2,000 individual flowers.
This instantly recognizable flower is native to the Americas, and is often found growing on roadsides and across plains in the Midwest, thriving in both scrub and dry, arid areas. Depending on their specific variety and adaptation in the wild, sunflowers can grow from between three and ten feet in height; while in cultivated environments have been known to reach a sky-reaching 20 feet high. Even more impressive is the speed at which the sunflower can grow, with the ability to increase their height nearly a foot per day. This stunning fact lends to an alternate meaning that has been assigned to the bloom, that of haughtiness and pride.
